This is how I feel right now.
A couple days ago, I found out about a recall on our cribs. It was very confusing. If you go onto the manufacturer’s website, they do not have the information about the latest recall on there, but they have information about a recall on the same crib, from last year. Which applied to my model of crib, but with different hardware. We supposedly have the “new hardware”, so according to last year’s recall, we were safe.
The new recall applies to the rest of the models of this crib, i.e., both of ours. I was mistaken when I thought we could get a hardware replacement kit- they are saying to discontinue use of the crib completely, and return them to where you got them. Simplicity, the manufacturer, is saying NADA, because their phone number doesn’t even work.
So, I conjured up a plan. I have had my eye on a water table/picnic table for a while now, and I thought if Target gave us a refund on the cribs (which they said they would do when I called to ask), we could go to Ikea and get some of their less expensive ones. Therefore, ending up with 2 new cribs and a new toy for the kids without having to spend any money. Since we don’t really have any and all.
Today was Todd’s lone day off this week, and we had a lot of errands to pack in there. Grocery shopping, post office run, returning cribs, and I really really wanted to take ONE kid to Disney to see the Playhouse Disney show. I thought it would be a nice way to get a little one on one time, and it would only take an hour or two. Well, Target had other plans for us today.
Upon getting to Target, (with the kids of course) it takes no less than 30 minutes to figure out if there is a recall on the cribs. Even though I printed it out from the Consumer Product Safety Commission website, and had the crib paperwork with the model number. Finally I am handed a giftcard for 300 bucks. Not what I was hoping for, but I’ll take it. Oh wait, that’s a giftcard, not cash, like I was told over the phone.
We go check out the cribs in the baby section, and find one that is comparable to the one we returned, except by Graco. The salesgirl scans it, and says it is ringing up for 44$! Whaaaat? I say “We’ll take 2!”
Then she says “But we don’t have it and neither does any store within 25 miles. And we can’t sell the floor sample, I’m sorry.”
OK- the sad thing is them not having the crib.. the weird thing is that the floor sample is about 10 inches across. Unless my babies were Lilliputians they would not really fit in there, so.. why would I want to buy it?
Big sigh…. but then she says, “But you can go to customer service and they can order it online.”
Yayyyy! I don’t want the kids sleeping in pack n plays, but for this deal, we’ll do it. We could grab that water table, a couple pairs of shoes too for the kids, and have money left over for that deal!
Off to check out the water/sand tables. They have the perfect one- it turns into a picnic table with seat when you put the top on it. We grab a couple other small toys, then get Lily some sandals and a pair of sneakers for the boys. We are happy as clams.
Down we go to customer service to order the cribs. Get on the computer, can’t find the crib. Ask the customer service associate, who can’t find it either, because apparently, it is completely out of stock. (Why is it on the floor, again, if it doesn’t exist in any warehouses, anywhere?”)
Back to the baby section to look at cribs, with the associate. They scan every crib there, and guess what? There are no white cribs in stock, at all. They did not even have 2 of any crib that they had on display. I ask if, in light of this information, there is any way they will just give us our money back instead of the gift card. Oh no, that’s not their policy. And any crib they did have, was closer to 200 each, so we’d not only be not getting all the fun stuff we picked up, but we’d have to spend more money out of our pockets. (April A., I really wish you were with me yesterday!)
The crankiness officially started setting in.. for all of us. The kids were restless and whining/crying, and I officially had steam coming out of my ears.
All the fun stuff went back on it’s shelves, the kids went back in the car, and we left Target cribless, with a list of phone number for other SuperTargets to call and see what they had in stock. We decided it was best to get the kids home and then have one of us get out and hunt down some cribs, which I did.
5 hours after the crib adventure began, I made it home with 2 new cribs. They are not white, because apparently no Target in Orlando possesses 2 white cribs. They were 150 each. (With tax I ended up spending another 20) There will be no more matching cribs in our babies room, since Lily’s is white, but at this point, I am not worried about matching anymore. The ironic part is that we painted Lily’s white to match the other two that we just returned. It would have matched the ones we just bought:)
I was home just in time for dinner and baths, which I did myself while Todd got to work putting the cribs together. They were put together just in time for bed. I didn’t ask, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t enjoy taking apart and putting together 2 cribs today. No Playhouse Disney show for us today. No fun stuff at all. Just new cribs that hopefully are safe, which I guess is the important thing.
But at the end of the day.. I get to look at this little face (among others)… so I will stop my complaining:)
