Describe (in detail!) a full day in the life of YOU!
This week’s Multiples and More Question of The Week is all about our daily schedules, and I thought it would be interesting to share what my days are like- work days and “days off”. Maybe this will help some people to understand a little bit better why I don’t answer my phone very often!
8:00 AM– kids start to wake up and I hear them over the monitor. Say a prayer that they would please just sleep a little longer. Fantasize about taking a shower before the kids get up.
8:15 AM– Realize that my prayers aren’t being answered. Maybe it’s because I don’t go to church? I go get the nuggets out of their cribs.
8:15-8:40– get the kids changed. Why does it take so long? Because Benjamin is extremely picky about his clothes, and I usually have to chase everybody around and wrestle them into their clothes. I put on Playhouse Disney while I am dressing them and this helps because they will hold still a little bit when Handy Manny is on…
8:45– Breakfast. While the kids are eating, Playhouse Disney is on, and I unload the dishwasher from the night before. My breakfast usually is the leftovers that the kids leave on their plates. Hmm.
9:30-10:30 Playtime. We go out to the backyard and the kids will play on their swingset, or in their pool/sprinklers. If it’s too hot or raining, we’ll read, build with blocks, do puzzles, etc.
10:30-Ploy takes over (our au pair) and I go to get ready for work. ( Have I mentioned I love having an au pair? No need to load the kids up and take them anywhere, rush to pick them up on time, etc)
11:00 AM– I leave for work at the golf course. I work hard but my job now is much, much easier than staying home with the kids.
8PMish -get home and spend a little time with the kiddos before they go to bed. By now they are bathed and in their jammies, and starting to settle down. We usually watch a DVD before bed-They are loving the Sesame Street “Learn About Numbers”, and anything “Dora” right now.
8:30-8:45 -Story time- I put the kids in their cribs, sit down in the middle of the floor, and read 3-4 books to them. (Their favorite right now is “Yummy Yucky”. )I kiss them good night, tuck them in, close their door…. and sigh. I get a lot of raised eyebrows because their bedtime is kind of late (and sometimes even later than this), but that’s our choice. I feel the benefits of the kids getting to spend more time with me and being tucked in by me outweigh the benefits of them going to bed earlier.
9PM- I sometimes take 10-20 minutes before I do any cleaning to jump on the computer and check my email, FB, and read blogs. It’s the first break I get all day.
9:20 PM– Clean up the kitchen, run the dishwasher, throw in the laundry, pick up toys, vacuum.
10:30 PM Work on Multiples and More, catch up on emails, listen to the news in background
11:00 PM Fall asleep watching a DVRd episode of the Ghost Whisperer.
And, here’s a “Day off” A lot of my days off are also days off for Ploy too, so I have the kids by myself.
8:00 AM-10:30– see above. Sometimes, if Todd is working a “close” shift (12- 9), he’ll get up with the kids and allow me to sleep in. Heaven!
10:30- 11:30– “School Time” We work on letters, numbers, shapes, colors, etc.
11:30– I give up trying to keep their simultaneously attention and let them play freely with whatever they wish.
12:00– Lunch time. Lately their favorite is PB & J!
12:45– I clean up the kitchen and try to keep an eye on the kids at the same time. Which usually results in some kind of coloring on the wall or my phone going missing.
1:00 Art time. We color, or do some kind of art project.
2:00 PM Cleanup time. I tell the kids they can watch a “movie” (Dora, etc, if they help me pick up their toys.) It’s starting to work!
2:30 PM Naptime. Ahhhhh, yes. Nice.
2:40– I straighten up a little more, do a little laundry, then check my computer stuff. I go into a time warp and the next thing I know, it;s 4:30 and Ben is waking up Lily and Cameron.
4:30– Kids are up, and we go outside. I have been bringing the soccer goal outside and working on some soccer drills with the kids. I think we have some serious potential.
5:00– We go inside since it is crazy hot outside, get a drink and a snack, and play some more.
5:30- I make dinner and pray (in vain) that they don’t get into too much trouble while I do so.
6:00 PM- Dinnertime. Have I mentioned that Ben is a slow and picky eater? This is the main reason why meals last so long…
7:00 PM- Bathtime. The kids that can take 40 minutes to get dressed in the morning will be naked in about 2.3 seconds when you say the word “bathtime”.
7:30PM Jammytime: This can take a while. They like to run around naked for as long as humanly possible. Jammytime usually becomes horsey-ride time too. I can still fit all three on back, but I am starting to feel like a packmule.
8:00 PM- Again, we have the kids help us pick up toys. The TV stays off until the toys are picked up. We all sit on the couches and watch another DVD to get the kiddos settled down for bed. From here, it’s the same as the above schedule!
* I should point out that I have not always been so regimented, and the schedule is flexible, especially if we go out. Now that we are in the throes of the terrible twos, we are making a concerted effort to keep the kids on a semi-tight schedule. I think they need as much structure as possible right now. It’s also different from the above in that my work hours fluctuate on a regular basis.
My favorite part of the day has got to be watching the kids play and run outside. It’s so much fun to see the smiles on their faces when they score a goal, or fly down the slide into their kiddie pool. My least favorite… breaking up the sporadic fights and putting one or more kids in time-outs. UGH- that is really not fun.
There definitely is not enough time in the day to fit in everything that I want to. I wish I could have more one-on-one time with the kids, more time to go to the gym, more time to work on Multiples and More, more time to call back my friends that I keep losing touch with. I really hope that someday I figure out a way to better organize myself so that I can fit more in.
That’s it for today’s QOTW. Play along and answer the Question of the Week on your own blog!
