As a kid, I used to love going to the library. I lived close enough that I could walk there by myself, and I remember every summer I participated in the summer reading program and had a blast reporting back to the librarians about the books I read in exchange for little prizes. There was nothing better than picking out a little plastic ruler or pencil topper from that bin of dollar store treasures! One of the many things I have to thank my mom for is for teaching me to love reading as much as she does. It’s something that I urgently hope to pass on to my kids as well.
But, I have a confession. They have never been to the library! I have been meaning to take them, but of course it has to happen on a day that I have help, and these days I am a little nervous to take them anywhere that peace and quiet is cherished. (See post below!)
In my quest to become privvy to the financial wisdom of Dave Ramsey without actually paying for his book, I decided to stop by the library near my house today and check it out. The moment I stepped inside, I was filled with excitement. I realized I haven’t set foot in a library in at least 5 years. I immediately noticed the kids’ room, and had to suppress the urge to skip over there. I talked to the librarian, (who was super friendly and helpful), and she signed my kids up for the summer reading program, and gave me a brand new book to take home for each of them, for free! For kids their age, “Starfish”, they get a credit for each day that you spend 20 minutes reading with them, which you indicate by coloring in a sailboat in their pamphlet. For each seven days you fill in, the kids will get a prize. Since we read with them everyday, the little nuggets will make out well when we actually take them. Of course, they don’t really understand the program yet, but they will.
They have a great selection of kids DVDs as well- I was able to borrow a cool DVD about trucks, which they all loved watching tonight before bed.
And perhaps the best part are the daily programs they have for kids. Mondays and Wednesdays they have toddler story time, as well as various other guest appearances from anyone from Ronald McDonald, to therapy dogs. I really, really, really can’t wait to take them there. I am going to try to take them separately when I can, so they’ll be easier to handle and then we can also get some one on one time.
The only sad part was that they did not have the Dave Ramsey book I wanted. But I am determined to acquire it somehow without having to buy it! I’m looking into this website now. Anybody have it and want to trade with me?
And, since I didn’t get a chance to take any photos today, here’s a few from exactly one year ago, today:
